Celebrating Freedom

Today marks the anniversary of our nation’s birth. On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted in Philadelphia by the Second Continental Congress and the United States of America was off and running. Much has changed since those days, but the foundation of freedom that was laid by the founding fathers continues to be strong to this day.

The second sentence in the declaration boldly states that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. We continue to hold those thoughts of freedom dear. We have freedom of religion, freedom to vote and voice our opinions, freedom of choice in the life we choose to lead, and yes the freedom to pursue the education we seek. Should we choose to be educated in the trades, the professions or in the arts and sciences, the choice is ours. And just as the choice is ours, so is the personal responsibility to succeed or fail. What is important is that we all have the opportunities, the freedoms to test ourselves without obstruction.

The School or Business and Technology at Excelsior College join the nation in celebrating our freedoms so beautifully envisioned two hundred and thirty six years ago!
